Does anyone know anything about the Atkins 28 Channel Cutter.I'm told its a Lyle Hess designed boat. It has the bowsprit but not the boomkin off the stern. Is it a cheap knock-off of the BCC or a good boat in its own right? I'm still shopping and I have come across this boat. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks Brent

William Atkins is a renown designer in his own right, but you will find many designers shared interest in similar early fishing, delivery, workboat designs and have incorporated some of these features in their contemporary designs as did Lyle Hess.

However, as with every design, the builder may have had a slightly differing vision of the same design as shown in the finished vessel.

I believe the design you are refering to may be "Fore An' Aft" 28' 8" Cutter
By William Atkin.

History and boat plans are still available through:

There is a Channel Cutter listed by North Atlantic Marine, in Grasonville, MD for this boat. You can find the listing if you do a Google search. I called on this boat and spoke to the broker as I noticed the boat on a trip to Annapolis.

This is not a Hess design. If you view the photos on the listing check out the aft and stern sections. I agree with Marty that it most closely resembles Atkins Fore and Aft design as depicted in his book "Of Yachts and Men" The designed displacement of Fore and Aft was about 20,000lbs with a 27'water line and draft of over 5'. This design was developed in 1927 for conventional carvel construction. The original rig was gaff with topsail.

I think originally this listing indicated a Lyle Hess design as a way to link the boat to the succesfull BCC and make it a more known quantity. I told the broker ( who handles primarily power boats) that this was not a Hess design and that the listing was misleading.

I am not sure who built this though she does have fairly nice lines. I think the asking is way high for a boat with questionable pedigree as to the builder and his adaption of an Atkin design.
Best to you

Nate, I am in Raleigh NC. This cutter is here on the east coast. I am interested in a Hess designed boat such as the BCC, the FC and also the Nor'sea 27. Brent
